Says says: OMG!

OMG, you guys! I need to organize my jewelry. No seriously, look.

Hot mess.

I'm thinking I need something that lays flat because a lot of my pieces are big and heavy. Having them hang damages the closure hardware over time (i.e. makes it all loosey and that's no good). But, ya know, style and functionality would be nice too.

Let's see what we can see, shall we?

Here we have a basic drawer organizer *snore*. But I LOVE the idea of using a little silicone ice-cube or baking thingie to hold earrings and other tiny things.

This is a bit more my style and would give me something to hunt for when I'm junkin! Mixed and matched saucers, cups, and bowls.

Could do this with an old pastry stand. I like it, I like it!

Now this one is hangy, but I love this idea too! You could take an old drawer from a piece of junky furniture, paint it, put some pretty scrapbook paper in the back and VOILA!

I think I like the pastry stand option the best! As a bonus, I'll repurpose my necklace holder into a scarf/hankie holder! They're too pretty to keep in a drawer.

How do you organize your pretties to keep them from being a tangled mess?

Or how do you WISH you organized your tangled mess?

Sara says: I FEEL SAINTLIKE

(^I'll take obscure Harry Potter jokes for $1,000, Alex. If you get that, I love you and you are, in fact, a nerd.^)

Ok folks, welcome to this wonderful installment of Sara's Dream House. Steel yourselves, things are about to get weird.

Welcome to the Neon Jesus Vestibule!

Now, this idea came to me many many years ago from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet.

Ever since little baby Sara saw this movie back in 1996, she's wanted neon crosses all over her house. I'm willing, as an adult, to limit this to one room.

Here's what would adorn such a place.

Proof that I'm not nuts...

or at least that there's other crazy folks like me!

These are divinely holographic.

I also have some amazing ideas about crafting with tarot cards, like making a tarot card garland/bunting. And of course, Muertos and roses EVERYWHERE!

Sara says: CHECK OUT THE MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED CRAFT MEDIUM EVER!

The toilet paper roll. Most of us just toss it in the garbage without a second glance, BUT WAIT JUST A DAMN MINUTE! Lookit all the things the little toilet paper roll that could can be!

You can make a ton of things using this basic shape. Just cut the roll into strips horizontally and squish.

Check out this wreath, using that same shape.

Adorable! Make little leaves with that same shape!

Poinsettias, OMG!

What else can we make?!?!?!?!?

Owls!

Ooooooo! It hardly even looks like a toilet paper tube anymore.

A little more advanced gluing perhaps, but what a cute gift holder thing!

Holiday candles!

Oooooo! Would be great for a Kwanzaa kinara or a Hanukkah menorah!

I think these lanterns are my favorite. You could seal the bottom and put an electric tealight in it!

I'm so excited! I've already began hoarding toilet paper and paper towel rolls to upcycle into beautiful (and cheap as dirt) things!

What's your favorite thing to upcycle into crafts? Coffee cans? Glass jars? Tell me!

Sara says: LET'S TALK TURKEY

OH. EM. GEE YOU GUYS! Thanksgiving is 2 weeks away. That's some real conversation for your ass! 2 weeks!

I've still been crocheting and playing with string like a mad woman. Maybe I'm stressed? Jacked up on the endless lattes I pour into my face? Who knows?! The point is, since this post, I've completed a pair of mittens (I made a pattern myself!), 2 hats, a leaf, a sugar skull, and now this dude - just in time for Thanksgivoweenmas! Hopefully I can keep up the momentum to make stuff for Christmas. AHHH!

TURKEY LURKEY!

Ignore the 800 dollar's worth of nursing school text books in the background.

Yes, I have a turkey hanging from my chandelier. Fun! You can nab the pattern over at Bitter Sweet. I didn't follow the pattern exactly, but I like how Turkey Lurkey ended up. This pattern could totally be an ami peacock too. Squee!

And check out the aforementioned crocheted leaves!

Here's some more Fall-ish ideas that are next on the agenda.

A sweet little cardinal. I think I'm gonna make one for my Granny's Xmas gift.

A grown-up size pumpkin beanie for me!

I'll try to take pictures of the rest of my hooking adventures this week. Is there any crafting you like to do in the Fall/Winter? Any recipes you're trying out for Turkey Day? I wanna know!

Sara says: I'M A TOTAL OCTOBERIST

Holy crap, it's November. Time to start thinking about the holidays! Eeek! I'm sad to see Fall on the wane, but I think I'm ready for some holiday cheer. October was pretty great! Matt and I staycationed in Hot Springs, we went to an alligator farm, we went to the state fair (I hugged a llama!), and I've been loitering around my local hotspots (Argenta, Heights, Hillcrest) pretty much weekly. I've picked up so many local goodies! Soap, tea, honey, beads, yarn! It's truly felt like a harvest and I am just very appreciative of being alive right now. :)

+My favorite posts this month:
-Purple Haze
-National Coming Out Day
-Juliet Bad Romance

+New music I've been pumped about (because I haven't read any new blogs, recommend me some?)
-Tom Waits, Bad As Me
-Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer & Chris Thile, The Goat Rodeo Sessions (here they are performing Attaboy)
-Drake, Take Care (here's Headlines)

+Movies I've watched:
-Season 1 of The Walking Dead, because I need something to replace True Blood on Sundays. I really LOVE the effects, but the character building is somewhat lacking in some areas - especially the female characters (Lori has never killed a zombie on screen, for example).

-ALL SORTS OF GOODNESS at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Fest

-The Perfect Vagina, which is online and free! It's from a filmmaker out of the UK and documents her journey learning about labiaplasty or "why we should love our lady bits rather than cut them up.". If you have a vulva, you should watch this. I had some great conversations about it!

-Twilight, I love love love debating the zeitgeist of Twilight. I'm so happy it exists. I'm going to go see Breaking Dawn with a friend this month! Teen Girl Squad activate!

-Paranormal Activity 3, eh it was better than the second one. I have this Halloween tradition of going to see really bad scary movies on Halloween. Last year's was The Last Exorcism.

+Creepiest Clown:
-POP!

+YouTube Videos that made me teehee:
-Nicki Minaj sings Super Bass with one of her littlest fans!

-Rethink Breast Cancer presents: Your Man Reminder

-It's better than drinking? Guinness World Records - Largest Collection of Clowns

-Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark: Cemetery Soup (These guys have more Scary Stories on their channel and have mad film-making skills! Super fun to see these stories brought to life!)

+Notable pins:
-Make an ami fishie out of plarn! I'm getting a bit obsessed with crochet...

-skelemingos and OMG WHERE CAN I GET A DEVIL ELF ON A SHELF?!?!?!

-Lady Gaga-o-lantern (from Telephone).
Source: jezebel.com via Sara on Pinterest

-"The ad shows Rick Genest, who you may know as Zombie Boy and have seen him in the Lady Gaga Born this Way video, being completely covered with Dermablend Leg & Body foundation. If you didn’t know who he was, the beginning of this video would probably not shock you (but the end would!) as his skin looks perfect- you can’t tell that he’s COVERED in tattoos from head to toe. This ad had me go out and buy some Dermablend concealer the next day, no joke!"

-The Miss Fat and Beautiful Contest, circa 1960

+Exciting happenings IRL:
-Christmas crafting begins!
-I see a light at the end of the tunnel for this semester at school!
-Thanksgiving recipe testing starts this week!

+Relevant photos:
Mum made us jack-o-peppers for Halloween!

Lucky cats from an Asian grocery store (I got the orange nom nom nom one!)

The Arkansas State Fair from the top of the ferris wheel!

Sassy alpaca at the fair!

Matt's doodle hung in an art gallery in Hot Springs!

Some of my plastic pumpkin collection on my porch!

+Big Girls Don't Cry Hotness of the Month:
-Fighting aliens with a hot pink hair dryer. Hiiii-ya!

And that's about it folks! I love October! There's just so many fun things to do! I'm a total Octoberist. How awesome was October for you?

Sara sings: PURPLE HAZE ALL IN MY BRAIN!

HAIR GEEKERY!

I had a lot of fun being a "Hot Tamale" (Garnier Nutrisse Rich Auburn Blonde #76), but I was concerned about using permanent dye on my cranium every 4 weeks. Often times, ideas come to me in dreams. I shot bolt upright one night and exclaimed, "PPUUURRRPPLLLEEE!"

So here's basically what Hot Tamale looks like on me. It's most true to color on the top of my head accounting for my backwards ombre as previously discussed. It's hard to tell in this picture since my hair is up, but trust me, the variance in tone is there!

Source: google.com via Sara on Pinterest

I'm not processing my hair in any way. I'm just gonna slap some Manic Panic Purple Haze on top of Hot Tamale and be amazed at the results.

I envisioned ending up somewhere in here...

Drum-roll please...

OMG I HEART THIS SO MUCH! I have no idea how I'm gonna keep up my roots, but we'll just worry about that later. It throws burgundy, but not in a I-used-all-sorts-of-different-red-dyes-and-fucked-up-and-now-it's-purple kind of way. The purple really shows through on the bottom tips of my hair and it's definitely purple. The Hot Tamale looks like highlights on top, but somehow the variance in tone that gave me the backwards ombre has diminished a lot. The first 2 photos above show how it can vary from favoring red to purple (and I didn't use any sort of light filter at all in the photos).

Here's some semi-pro tips for Manic-Panic-ing your head!

+ The colors I've personally used that look awesome without bleaching your hair first are: Purple Haze (of course!), Vampire Red, Red Passion (which is really pink, kind of), and Raven.

+ Bleaching your hair isn't overly difficult but you have to be prepared to basically work on your hair all damn day and you still may not be able to lift it light enough. For the lightest Manic Panic colors, your hair basically has to be white. Consult helpful beauty store people or get thee to a professional!

+ Manic Panic can sit on your head all day long! Especially when you don't bleach your hair first, it's important to let it sit for a long time. I waited at least 2 hours before rinsing. Some people sleep in it! The longer you wait the better.

+ Make that hair thirsty! I used a hair scrub, yes a hair scrub, and shampooed (no conditioner, Manic Panic will do that for you!)  my hair thoroughly before dyeing. Leesha, aka xsparkage, totally turned me on to this hair scrub by Redken. It's awesome!

+Hit your hair with the blow-dryer a few times while the dye is setting. This "opens up" the hair and lets the color in.

+Rinse your hair in cold water! This "closes" the hair and reduces dye fall out.

+Rinse your hair with a bit of white vinegar. This helps make your hair's pH more color friendly blah blah blah SCIENCE! I use about 1/2 a cup of vinegar to 1/2 a cup of water. Don't get it in your eyes though!

+Avoid pool water and no more super-hot showers!

+You can add a bit of Manic Panic to your conditioner to touch up the color.

+See the Manic Panic Tips section for more!
